How GDL works

GDL takes hard science and engineering problems and searches for inventions worth building. Here is the process, explained plainly.

Understand

Every search starts with a well-defined challenge — a specific technical problem with clear success criteria. GDL researches the problem landscape first: the physics, the economics, the constraints, and what already exists. The problem sets the boundaries; the research sets the map.

Explore

Rather than converging on one approach, GDL deliberately explores a wide range of solution directions grounded in that research. The goal is breadth across genuinely distinct mechanisms and architectures — not variations on the same idea — to surface non-obvious approaches a conventional search would miss.

Invent

Candidate concepts are developed into concrete proposals: the mechanism, the architecture, how it would be built, and what it would cost. Each candidate is generated with live research and quantitative checks behind it, not free-floating speculation.

Challenge

Every candidate is challenged on novelty and prior art — is this actually new, or a repackaging of something that exists? — and stress-tested against physics, manufacturability, and failure modes. Weak concepts are eliminated here. GDL is designed to reject attractive ideas when the evidence does not support them.

Evaluate

Surviving concepts are evaluated and compared across independent perspectives: feasibility, economics, robustness, testability, and novelty. Evaluation is adversarial by design — concepts are scored blind and ranked against each other, not graded on enthusiasm.

Strengthen

The strongest concepts get targeted repair: the weakest load-bearing element of each is identified and reworked, and the concept is re-evaluated. Strengthening is bounded and honest — a concept that cannot be repaired with evidence stays weak in the record.

Verify

The load-bearing uncertainties are made explicit: what must be true for this to work, what would kill it, and the cheapest decisive experiment that settles the question. Every strong concept ships with decisive tests and explicit kill criteria.

Package

What survives is packaged as a structured technical document — mechanism, ranked alternatives, risks, economics, build path, decisive tests — with provenance maintained for how it was produced. Designed to be read, shared, and acted on by engineers and decision-makers.

What the outputs are

Discovery outputs are hypothesis-driven technical documents. Results remain hypotheses until evidence advances them — each names its decisive tests and explicit kill criteria, and human judgment and engineering review remain part of the process.
