Grounded Discovery Labs
Discover tomorrow’s AI-enabled inventions with today’s AI.
Most AI applications help us use existing knowledge more efficiently. GDL is built to search for new things worth building.
Grounded Discovery Labs combines frontier AI models with grounded research, adversarial evaluation, prior-art analysis, quantitative checks, and evidence-driven testing to search for novel, buildable, economically meaningful inventions.
What GDL is
An invention search system, not a brainstorming tool
Search, not ideation
GDL searches for inventions rather than merely generating ideas. New science expands what is possible; GDL searches what becomes possible — across many distinct mechanisms and architectures, not variations on one.
Evidence over enthusiasm
Candidate concepts are grounded in real research, challenged against physics, prior art, cost, and risk, and compared adversarially. GDL is designed to reject attractive ideas when the evidence does not support them.
Hypotheses until proven
Results remain hypotheses until evidence advances them. Every strong concept ships with decisive tests and explicit kill criteria, and human judgment and engineering review remain part of the process.
The process
From hard problem to defensible discovery
GDL researches the problem landscape, generates many distinct candidate mechanisms, challenges novelty and prior art, evaluates feasibility and economics, exposes the load-bearing uncertainties, and defines the decisive tests — then packages what survives, with provenance.
Evidence & validation
Built to say “no” to its own ideas
GDL’s development record includes positive results, negative results, and experiments that proved uninformative — kept on purpose. A failed hypothesis can be valuable if the experiment tells us what not to build.
Historical Discovery Archive
50 Discovery Packs — an early-generation record
Historical archive notice
These Discovery Packs were generated in April 2026 by an earlier generation of GDL using an earlier discovery pipeline and earlier frontier AI models. They are preserved as a transparent record of GDL’s development and early exploration across multiple technical domains. They should not be interpreted as representative of the current GDL 1.0 architecture, model stack, or evidence standards.
Industrial Heat Retrofit
Bolt-on thermoacoustic-Stirling resonator tubes clamp directly onto industrial flue ducts and convert waste heat (250–500°C) into grid-quality electricity via a linear alternator with no moving hot parts.

PFAS Destruction
Design a municipal or industrial water-treatment add-on that destroys PFAS rather than merely concentrating it, at realistic flow rates and operating cost.

Vertical Farm Lighting
Design an LED lighting/control system for vertical farms that materially cuts energy use while maintaining leafy-green yield and quality.

Where GDL comes from
Developed inside a real build environment
Grounded Discovery Labs is developed within Westar LLC in Dorchester, Wisconsin. Westar has spent decades designing and building real machinery, automation, robotics, fabricated systems, and production equipment. GDL applies that build-oriented perspective to AI-enabled invention discovery.
